Roger Federer

Roger Federer is widely considered the best tennis player of all time.  He has been ranked number 1 in the world for 280 total weeks, including a record 237 consecutive weeks from February of 2004 until November of 2008.  He has won 16 Grand Slam titles and is one of only 3 players (with Nadal and Agassi) to have completed a career Grand Slam on all three surfaces.  Federer, having been born on August 8th, 1981, is getting up there in age for a tennis player, but I am far from counting out several more successful years near the top of the rankings for this tennis legend.

Betting On Roger Federer

A bet on Roger Federer is never a bad thing.  He showed this when he was a large underdog in the semi-finals of the French open against Novak Djokovic, who was on a 41 match winning streak, and pulled out a big 4 set victory.  Federer will almost always be the favourite and the only players he may be a slight underdog against would be Rafael Nadal or Djokovic.

That being said it is important to understand Roger’s game in order to know his chances in certain situations.

  • Roger is strongest on grass courts and weakest on clay.  At the time of writing this article, Roger had a career winning percentage of .873 on grass, .825 on hard and .765 on clay courts, while also performing slightly better outdoors than indoors.  Surface and environment matter a great deal when betting on tennis, so be sure to include these facts in your decisions to wager on Federer.
  • Roger’s backhand can be considered inconsistent.  When firing, his one handed backhand is one of the best in the game, but Federer has been known to go through streaks where his backhand fails him.  Check to see how his backhand has been doing in previous matches before backing Federer in a match.
  • Never count him out.  As mentioned earlier if you find a tennis betting line where Roger Federer is the underdog, it is rarely a bad bet.  Federer is a very proud player, and after 280 weeks at number 1 he expects to win every match he is in.

Main Rivalries

At this time men’s tennis is really a 3-man battle between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Federer vs Nadal

These two held the top two rankings in men’s tennis for over four years, which means that they have met in a great deal of very important finals.  Nadal leads the head-to-head between the two 17-8, but when you break it down by surface it’s not nearly as lopsided consider Nadal is nearly unbeatable on clay.

Clay head-to-head: 12 – 2 in favour of Nadal
Hard court head-to-head: 4 – 4
Grass court head-to-head: 2 – 1 in favour of Federer

Federer vs Djokovic

Djokovic went on a tear to start the 2011 season adding his name to the same breathes as those who speak of Nadal and Federer.  Federer holds a 14-9 head-to-head advantage over Djokovic, but Novak has won 3 of their last 4 meetings.  The two have never played on grass, but Federer holds a 3-1 advantage on clay and an 11-8 lead on hard courts.

Roger Federer still has a lot of gas in the tank and I know I for one will take Federer as my Wimbledon bet for many more years.
